Bottle stoppers to be orientated are thrown into hopper 2 whence they pass through a discharge aperture into orientating basket 1. The basket is formed of two parts: the first part is composed of pairs of guides 6, 7 carried by rings 4, 5 and is provided with apertures 13 and is mounted so as to be rotated about fixed shaft 10; the second part is fixed deflector 17 (Fig. 4). which is secured to shaft 10 and is positioned within the first part and is shaped as shown; and the interaction of the first and second parts of the basket effect the orientation of the stoppers, the stoppers when orientated dropping by gravity down shoot 3. Operation of basket 1.-The stoppers, from hopper 2, roll down into rotating basket 1 and fall between pairs of guides 6, each stopper assuming a position with point outwards (see Fig. 1). On each pair of guides, one stopper is selected to be orientated and discharged, i.e. the stopper which is close to the flange 19 of deflector 17, and which rolls round the said flange (see Fig. 4). As the said pair of guides rotates clockwise, the selected stopper rolls round flange 19 till, at 21, it is free to go past flange 19 and to pass across the wall 25 of the deflector and then to fall orientated down shoot 3.
