856,484. Shelling cacao beans. LEHMANN G.m.b.H. MASCHINENFABRIK F. B. May 16, 1958, No. 15731/58. Class 58. Apparatus for shelling cacao beans comprises a casing 5, substantially square in cross-section, having a top 6, sides 7 and an open bottom, a drum 3 rotatable within the casing about a horizontal axis, beater blades 4 fitted around the periphery of the drum, clear of the casing, and a feed hopper 2 having a wall located in a plane perpendicular to the top 6 and parallel to or containing the axis of the drum and an opposed wall diverging upwardly from the said wall. The speed of rotation of the drum may be varied. In operation, cacao beans 1 fed through the hopper into the casing are struck by the rotating beater blades and hurled against the top and side of the casing. Shells are thus removed from the ribs. Detached shells 10 and ribs 9 are discharged from the bottom of the casing.
