Abstract

Paper is impregnated with a glue film of a condensation product obtained by condensing together phenol or a homologue, a sulphonic acid of phenol or a homologue and formaldehyde, then adding melamine and further formaldehyde and continuing the condensation. The product is used for the gluing or surface coating of wood (see Group VIII). In examples, partially sulphonated cresol is condensed with formaldehyde at 95 DEG C. and pH8, additional cresol and formaldehyde added and condensation continued at 95 DEG C. and pH7.8. Then melamine and formaldehyde are added and condensation continued at 80 DEG C. and pH 6.5-7.0. Specification 703,234 is referred to.
