718,293. Preparing yeast; aerating liquids. OLSEN, A. J. C. Dec. 18, 1952 [Dec. 18, 1951], No. 29604/51. Classes 14(1) and 14(2) A fermentation vessel 12 for preparing yeast, penicillin, &c. has in its bottom wall a gas chamber 15 which has removable top and bottom covers 16 and 17 and is connected to perforated aeration tubes 18 and to a gas supply pipe 19. The chamber may be a tube secured vertically in the bottom wall of the vessel and wide enough to admit a man. The cover 17 may support, in alignment with an aperture therein, one end of the pipe 19, the other end of which is connected to the source of gas by a swivel joint so that the cover can be swung away from the chamber. Alternatively, the pipe may be secured rigidly in the side of the chamber. The aeration tubes may be arranged radially around the chamber. They may project through the side walls of the vessel and their outer ends may be provided with screw plugs or caps 21, e.g. to facilitate cleaning from the outside of the vessel. The aeration tubes may, however, lie entirely within the vessel and may be detachably .connected to the chamber as by threaded unions.
