Abstract

<PICT:0695322/IV (b)/1> A plant for producing fuel gas, principally methane, by digestion of waste organic matter, comprises a digester tank, a slurry feed pipe which forms an axle for rotation of a set of stirrers within the tank, a used slurry outlet, and a gas holder engaging said tank. The tank 1 is fed with a slurry of waste and water by feed-pipe 3 until it begins to come out of discharge pipe 11. Pipe 3 rises in the centre of the tank at 5 and carries a tube 16 on which stirrer blades are radially mounted. An extension of the feed-pipe forms a housing for the gas pipe 6 communicating with gas discharge pipe 7 having a trap 10 for separation of moisture. The gas holder 2 is inverted in the slurry or in an annular chamber formed between the tank and a jacket 22 or an inner wall, and filled with water 23. The top blades 17 of the stirrer consist of vertical plates while the others consist of oppositely inclined plates 18, 19 to throw up and force down the slurry, respectively. Guides at the ends of the blades may engage channels on the inner wall of the gas holder or guide-sockets 21 may engage rods 15 on the holder so that rotation of the latter, as by a crank 27, is transmitted to the stirrer. A screw conveyer 13 may be located in pipe 11 and the discharged slurry fed to a tank on top of the digester and divided by a filter screen into two compartments, the filtered liquid being returned with fresh feed.
