Abstract

867,948. Gravity-separation apparatus. CHAIN BELT CO. April 3, 1959 [April 14, 1958 ; March 2, 1959], No. 11436/59. Class 46. Liquid containing floating and settleable material is introduced via an inlet box 8, Fig. 2 to a channel formed between the outer wall 11 of the tank and an inner wall 10, the floor 12 of the channel rising around both halfcircumferences of the tank to a scum box 14 diametrically opposite the inlet box 8. The raw liquid is discharged through ports 23 in the wall 10 against a skirt 17. Sludge is withdrawn by an eductor tube 5 and clarified liquid by a trough 19 which is octagonal in plan and communicates with a discharge pipe 21a. In Fig. 4 the wall 10 and skirt 17 are replaced by a skirt 34 having, between it and the tank wall, a floor which rises from an inlet box 30 around both sides of the tank to a scum box 41. Here the ports 38 are in the channel floor, and are spaced apart by distances inversely proportional to their distances from the clarified liquid trough 25. Sludge is withdrawn by an extensible eduction tube 23a as described in U.S.A. Specification 2,863,564.
