799,297. Gravity-separation apparatus; purifying liquids. DORR-OLIVER, Inc. Jan. 28, 1957 [Feb. 1, 1956], No. 2940/57. Class 46. [Also in Group XXVIII] Influent liquid, which may have been aerated, is introduced at 13, 14 to a dome 15 maintained at sub-atmospheric pressure by a vacuum pump 32. Floating and aerated solid and liquid impurities are discharged by skimmer blades 24 to trough 25, conduit 26 and scum chamber 27. Liquid, rendered non-turbulent by the damping effect of internal shear, emerges with uniform velocity distribution from the lower end of the dome 15 into the main body of liquid in the tank 10, whence sludge is scraped to a sump 19 and thickened therein by blades 22, and liquid flows into launder 33. By changing the angle of the blades 18 sludge may be discharged to a non-central sludge sump. In Fig. 2 (not shown), the tank is rectangular, and dome 15, influent conduit 13, scum chamber 27 and sludge sump 19 (with discharge conduit 20) are all at one end. Launder 33 is at the other end, and an endless belt with sludge-moving blades extends the length of the tank.
