Abstract
575,827. Clarifying foul liquids. TRIGGS, W. W. (Dorr Co.) Aug. 23, 1944, No. 16091. [Classes 46 and 111] Apparatus for the clarification of polluted liquids comprises a tank having partitioning means the lower edge of which is spaced from the bottom of the tank, so that the tank is divided into two communicating compartments, each compartment having means for the supply and withdrawal of liquid, means being provided for delivering into the second compartment liquid that has been withdrawn from the first compartment and submitted to an additional treatment, and means being provided for withdrawing sediment from the bottom of the tank. In the construction indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, a tank 10 is divided into two compartments 22, 23 by a partition 19 which terminates above the bottom of the tank to leave a space for passage of an endless conveyer 40 provided with scrapers 47 for delivering sediment to a sump 13. Liquid to be treated enters compartment 22 by a feed pipe 6 and is distributed by a launder 25 and baffle 26. At the other end of the compartment is a launder 32 from which liquid flows through pipe 73 to a biologic trickling filter 70. Liquid also flows to the filter through pipe 75 from the outlet'37 of the compartment 23. The filtered liquid is pumped through pipe 82 and valve-controlled pipes 83,84 to the feed pipe 6 and to a launder 30 of the compartment 23. Scum is removed through a slotted trough 58 provided with an adjusting handle 60. In a modification the filter is above the level of the top of the tank and the pump supplies the liquid to the filter. Fig. 7 shows an arrangement in which two filters are used. Liquid from launder 30 is led by a pipe 106 to a well 107 from which it is pumped through pipes 108, 110 to a filter 100. The filtered liquid flows through pipes 101, 102, 103, pipe 103 communicating through pipe 104 with a well 105 from which liquid is pumped to the filter 120. The filtered liquid flows to launder 32. The quantity of liquid supplied to the launder 32 may be larger than that overflowing past the weir 36 whereby a back flow of liquid occurs along the bottom of the tank from compartment 23 to compartment 22, and this facilitates the work of the scrapers 47 on the endless conveyer 40.
