Abstract
1373189 Treatment of waters U PASSAVANT AG [trading as PASSAVANT-WERKE MICHEL BACHER-HUTTE] 11 Oct 1972 [12 Oct 1971 20 April 1972] 46960/72 Heading C1C A method of treating waters comprises dividing the liquid in a sedimentation zone into a plurality of parallel flow paths, flowing these paths through channels inclined to the vertical wherein the pollutants settle and pass downwards, and discharging the deposited pollutants from the bottom of the flow paths in a uniformly distributed manner downwardly into a thickening zone so that the pollutants can be mechanically thickened, the thickened deposit being scraped from this zone. Prior to sedimentation, the waters may be destabilized and flocculated. A suitable apparatus for carrying out the process is shown in Fig. 1, wherein waters pass through destabilization compartment 4, flocculation compartment 3 and thence to sedimentation compartment 2. This latter compartment comprises inclined separator plates 14 having, at their outlets, pipes 15 to return clear waters to overhead liquid channels 16. Waters containing pollutants flow down between the plates 14 and the pollutants settle into thickening compartment 5. The pollutants are thickened by the action of stirrer 6 after which the sludge is removed by the scraping action of blades 12. Accumulated sludge in the sump 13 is finally removed by pump 21.
