Industrial and town waste waters freed from matter harmful to a fermentation process are passed through a measuring apparatus 30, Fig. 1, to a continuously-operating fermentation device 1 to which are supplied air at 2 and, automatically according to the quantity of waste water, a fermentation agent at 18 and moulds, nutrition agents or the like at 19. The waste water is pumped at 4 to a clarifier 5 to which a clarifying agent, e.g. milk of lime, is supplied at 8 from a storage container 7. The clarified water overflows into a saturator 9 in which excess clarifying agent and other substances are precipitated by, e.g., carbon dioxide supplied at 10. The water rises from the saturator 9 to a discharge vessel 11 whence it flows to a sedimentation apparatus or filter 12. Clear treated water flows into a container 14 while sludge flows to a thickener 15, dryer 16 and container 17. Sludge free from precipitating agents may be obtained by inserting between the fermentation device 1 and the clarifier 5 a rotating suction filter 20, Fig. 2, from which the filtrate, collected at 21 by a vacuum pump 22, is pumped at 4 to the clarifier 5. Sludge including precipitating agents may be obtained by inserting the filter before the saturator 9. Instead of the filter 20 a flotation vessel 25, Fig. 3, to which air is supplied at 24 and from which sludge is withdrawn at 26, may be used. As a further alternative to either of the above a settling tank may be used either before the clarifier 5, Fig. 4 (not shown) or before the saturator 9, Fig. 8 (not shown). Sludge from the device 12 and water from the saturator 9 may be re-cycled to the clarifier 5. Water from the fermentation device 1 may be re-cycled to itself. Sludge from the flotation vessel 25 of Fig. 3 may be recycled to the fermentation device. Specifications 662,750 and 808,905 [Group VI] are referred to.
