Abstract

1381718 Effluent purification SWALESEDGE Ltd 25 May 1972 [25 May 1971] 17055/71 Heading C1C A method of purifying effluent comprises removing coarse solids from the effluent, feeding the liquid so-treated to at least one aeration tank, circulating liquid from the aeration tank to at least one biological filter and back to at least one aeration tank, and separating suspended solids from liquid removed from the aeration tank by electrolytic flotation. The method may be carried out in the apparatus illustrated in Fig. 2. Effluent enters day intake tank 16 which is provided with an auger 26 which agitates the effluent thereby keeping solids in suspension. This effluent is fed to a fibre stripper 28 and thence to moat compartment 12 wherein the effluent is aerated and circulated by means of rotor 26. Effluent is then pumped to the distribution tank 20. This tank allows equal distribution of effluent to the biological filters 14. The effluent is then fed back to moat compartment 12. This circulation of effluent may be carried out continuously or on a time basis. This mode of operation is interrupted by operation of the motorized valve V1 which passes effluent from the distribution tank 20 to the electrolytic flotation compartment 18. In this compartment, electrodes 36 and 38 cause an electrolytic flotation process and hence separation of suspended solids. Clarified effluent is fed from this compartment via a tapping above the electrodes to tanks T1 and T2 for further clarification. Top floating sludge may be discharged from the electrolytic flotation compartment via conduit 37 to day intake tank 16. Sludge from the base of the compartment 18 may be discharged into a sludge dewatering tank 24, and thence discharged to the outside via valve V5, surplus liquid being drained via pipe 37 to day intake tank 16. Water may be admitted into the tank 16 by valve V4 so as to maintain the liquid level in this tank.
