Abstract

1329437 Digester with preliminary separator R B REINHALL 12 Nov 1970 [14 Nov 1969] 53892/70 Headings B1D and B1X A suspension of lignocellulose is fed into a digester vessel, operating under pressure, via a separator located in an upper extension 12 of the vessel and comprising a double-walled shell 36, 40 enclosing a rotary screw 34 which lifts the solid part of the suspension and discharges it over the upper edge of the shell to fall down into the main part of the vessel, while the liquid passes through round or elongated holes in the inner wall of the shell and is discarged through conduit 42. Inlet 38 opens tangentially into the inner wall of the shell. The blade or blades of screw 34 may be radially inclined downwardly and outwardly to press solids against inner wall 36. Demountable couplings 41 enable the separator to be lifted from the vessel with top cover 18 to which it is attached. Rotary scraper 44, and agitator 46 assist solids discharge and prevent outlet conduit 42 from clogging. Several separators may be arranged one above another and operate in parallel or series. The screws could be all on one shaft 28 or on concentric shafts. The inner shell wall 36 and screw could be cylindrical in form.
