Abstract

1,200,842. Disintegrating apparatus. H. W. DYSON. 29 Feb., 1968, No. 9790/68. Headings BID and B2A. [Also in Division F4] Apparatus for disintegrating solid materials, e.g. garbage, cardboard or paper, and mixing the same with a liquid carrier to form a slurry comprises a housing 31, a tank 34 having a dished portion 33 and a foraminous portion 43, a feed tube 46 to introduce the solid materials and the liquid carrier into the tank, a disintegrating impeller disc 51 rotatably mounted in the tank to effect the disintegrating and mixing, the disc 51 having teeth 55 and vanes 53, the portion 43 effecting discharge of the slurry into the housing 31, and baffle members 48 for deflecting non-disintegrated particles of the solid . materials in the slurry downwardly against the disc 51. The portion 33 is permanently secured in the housing 31 and the portion 43 comprises a hollow cylindrical shell which is releasably secured within support legs 36 mounted at their upper ends on the housing 31 and engaging at their lower ends with the portion 33. The slurry discharged through the portion 43 passes into a collecting trough 35 the bottom of which is formed by a partition 32. The housing is provided with a cover 41 which is releasably sealed thereto. The slurry is passed through a pipe 67 to a deliquefying separator 13 which comprises a casing 71, a foraminous shell 72 and a rotatable screw 73 provided with brush portions 76, the liquid carrier passing outwardly through the shell 72 into an annular space 78 which communicates with a valved return line 14 for recirculating the liquid carrier into the tank 34. The deliquefied pulp is carried upwardly into a shoot 79. The pulp then passes through a pipe 16 to a diverter 17 and may be diverted either into a waste line 18 or into a second separator 23. The separator 23, which is similar to the separator 13, discharges the pulp into a shoot 89 from which the pulp is deposited on a screen conveyor 93 which carries the pulp to squeeze rolls 24. The apparatus is particularly adapted to shipboard use wherein at times it is desirable to discharge the entire slurry to the waste line of the ship while the ship is at sea and to dewater the slurry to form a deliquefied pulp which is more readily disposed of while the ship is in port. In a modification, the teeth (155) Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown) are cast integrally with support plates (156) which are in the form of quadrants of uniform size and shape. Further, the shell 172, Fig. 8, is perforated at its upper cylindrical portion and is flared outwardly at its lower end. Still further, the screw 173 extends only from the top of the shell 172 down to the mid point thereof. The screw is provided with a brush 177 about its periphery and with a cleaning brush 178 therebelow. In another modification, the separator (213) Figs. 9 and 10 (not shown) receives the discharge from a plurality of disintegrators (212) and comprises a casing (271) and a plurality of tapered foraminous shells (272) mounted with their axes inclined to the vertical, the shells being provided with screws (273) which are driven from a common drive shaft (284). In a further modification, the separator (313) Figs. 11 and 12 (not shown) is similar to the separator 113, Fig. 8 except that below the screw (373) is a semi-circular partition (374) and below the partition are rotatable brush elements (377). In a still further modification, Fig. 13 (not shown) the screw (473) terminates short of the wiper (488) leaving a free space (492) and the perforations in the tapered shell (472) are graduated in size. In another modification, a separator (570) Figs. 14 and 15 (not shown) receives the discharge from a plurality of disintegrators and comprises a casing (571) and a pair of foraminous shells (572) provided with screws (573) the axes of the shells and screws being vertical. The perforations in the shells are graduated in size. The apparatus is stated to be an improvement on that shown in Specification 3,191,872.
