872,717. Extracting sugar &c. BRANNSCHWEIGISCHE MASCHINENBAUANSTALT. April 14, 1958 [April 17, 1957], No. 11800/58. Classes 81 (1) and 127. Apparatus for extracting sugar &c. from pieces of sugar-beet, sugar-cane, &c. and washing or bleaching pieces of cellulose &c. comprises a substantially vertical tower 14, up which the pieces are moved against a downward flow of water &c. The tower has a stirring and distribution zone A near its base, an extraction zone C in the middle and a discharge zone D near the top and, optionally, a separating zone B between zones A and C. Zone A has an inlet 18 through which pieces mixed with water &c. are pumped by a pump 17. Descending water &c. containing dissolved sugar, &c., i.e. juice, leaves the tower through a screen 19 and an outlet 20. The pieces are stirred and raised, in zone A, by inclined blades 15 on the lower, e.g. separate, part 4a of a rotatable shaft 4 passing axially through the tower. When the tower has a zone B; the pieces are raised through this zone by a worm conveyer 27 secured to the shaft 4. The pieces are raised through C by inclined blades 21 mounted on the shaft 4 in groups forming a plurality of vertically-spaced circular fans, blades in each fan being opposite gaps between blades of an adjacent fan. The fans are separated by distances smaller or equal to their vertical thickness. Guide plates 23, which are adjustably secured to the casing of the tower, so that their inclination can be altered, project radially into the spaces between the fans. The pieces are raised through the zone D by inclined blades 28 mounted on the shaft 4, in groups forming circular fans similar to those in zone C. Guide plates 37, fixed to the casing of the tower, project radially into the spaces between the fans in zone D. The extracted pieces are removed from zone D by a worm conveyer 31. Water &c. is fed into the upper part of zone D through a pipe 33 and into the lower part through a pipe 34, which may include a heater 36. When the shaft 4 is divided into two separate parts, the lower part 4a is driven by a motor 9 and the upper part by a motor 10. In an alternative construction, Fig. 2 (not shown), alternate blades 21 in each fan in zone C are upwardly off-set. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 820,650.
