A pan type concrete mixer has paddles 5, and nozzles 7 spaced round the peripheral wall 1b and (if the pan is annular) the-inner wall 2, for injecting -steam and/or water at a preselected temperature and pressure directly into the mass of material. The nozzles are preferably situated as shown in the angle between the bottom and the walls and are supplied from pipes 10 by a ring manifold 6 having an internal ring baffle 9 to prevent direct discharge from the pipes to the nozzles.
