Abstract

717,032. Compound sheet materials. EVANS, H. Dec. 31, 1951 [Oct. 13, 1950], No. 25039/50. Class 140. Laminated floor tiles comprise a flexible surface layer of rubber or rubber-like plastic material such as polyvinyl chloride secured to a rigid but non-frangible backing such as compressed fibre-board or plywood, the backing layer extending beyond the surface layer along two or more edges. The two layers may be identical in shape but secured together in offset relation, Fig. 7, or the surface layer may be smaller than the backing which projects along all edges, Fig. 9, or along three edges, Fig. 11. In use the tiles are stuck to a floor with the edges of the backings on adjacent tiles contiguous, any overlapping edges of the surface layer are stuck down on the exposed backing of an adjacent tile, by weak adhesive, by tape adhesive-coated on both sides, or by tape adhesive-coated on the lower side only, a weak adhesive being subsequently applied on the upper. Any channels between adjacent surface layers, e.g. 14, Fig. 11, are filled by strips 15 similarly stuck down. The corners of the backing may be cut as at 17, Fig. 9, so that tiles Al of this kind may fit closely together leaving spaces to be occupied by other tiles A2 wherein the backing is smaller than the surface layer. The backing, if porous, may be impregnated with a waterproofing composition.
