Class 20(4) A floor comprises an insulating layer 3 having the edges thereof spaced from lateral boundary walls 6 and freely movable on a support 1, an intermediate layer 4 freely movable on the layer 3 and also spaced from the walls and serving to support a floor covering 5 provided on or connected with the layer 4 and spaced from the walls, and edge portions 7 which engage the covering and the walls. As shown in Fig. 1, sheets 3 of bituminized fibreboard are laid in a floating manner on a layer 2 of sand and the covering 5 of linoleum, tiles, rubber, wood or synthetic plastic is attached by cementing to the layer 4 of hardwood, fibreboard or other organic or inorganic material. The'sheets 3 have a roughened under-surface to create a frictional resistance on the sand, and the layer 4 has a rough upper surface to ensure good adhesion of the covering 5. In modifications, (a) the insulating layer 3 is applied directly to the supporting member 1 and the layer 4 may be of asphalt which is resilient or rendered unimpressible by a solid filler, and (b) the layer 4 is of resilient bitumen or asphalt sheets or webs rendered unimpressible by quartz sand granules applied directly to a bituminized paper layer 3. The sheets comprising the layer 4 may be inter-connected by chamfering and cementing together the edges thereof. A layer 4 of asphalt or bitumen may be rendered resilient by the addition of a synthetic material such as a phenolic resin or resin and be combined with a backing of sand-paper, synthetic resin such as a polyvinyl chloride foil, or textile material; also, materials, such as wood, glass ceramics, metal or synthetic materials in the form of granules, waffle or lattice or grid-type structures may be embedded in the layer.
