Abstract

A method of surfacing roads, floors, walls, and the like, consists in first applying to the foundation or base a cushioning layer comprising a resilient and adhesive composition of ground rubber scrap and unvulcanized rubber in paste form, and then applying the desired finishing layer before the cushioning layer has set. The surfacing layer may consist of tar, bitumen macadam, asphalt or cement for roads; linoleum, rubber sheeting, mosaic or tiling, for floors; and tiles, wallboards and the like, for walls. The cushioning composition may include waste paper, flue dust, pumice powder or whiting. A suitable composition comprises 100 grams of rubber latex, 90 grams of finely ground rubber tyre scrap, 25 grams of distilled water and 1 gram of zinc carbonate or oxide. For quick vulcanization, 1 gram of finely divided sulphur and 0,75 gram of superaccelerator may be added. If desired, the composition may include bituminous material and be spread on the foundation while hot. Such a composition may consist of 20 grams of dry rubber scrap, 5 grams of rubber latex, and 75 grams of hot bitumen.
