Abstract
A surgical swab, incorporating an X-ray opaque filament, of the type described in the parent Specification, has the said filament of sinuous or undulating form to assist in detection of the swab. The filament is an elastomer loaded with X-ray opaque material, such as barium sulphate, and is formed into a sinuous configuration during application to a gauze web which is then cut and folded repeatedly upon itself to form the swab. In order to assist visual detection, carbon black is incorporated in the filament and the folding of the gauze is such as to bring the filament to an outside surface. In the preferred method of applying the filament to the gauze, the filament is rendered tacky by heating as it is pressed against the gauze and the latter is stretched at the same time to produce the undulations.
