Abstract
An X-ray detectable swab is formed by incorporating in it a filament of an elastomer which has been rendered opaque to X-rays. Such materials as barium, strontium, thorium, lead or tungsten, or compounds thereof such as barium sulphate, are incorporated in forming the filament. This is rendered adhesive, by being passed through a suitable volatile solvent, and pressed into contact with a continuous web of cotton gauze. The web is then cut into desired lengths and folded to form swabs. In an alternative process the filament is made to adhere to the cotton gauze by being softened by heating.
