Abstract
Surgical dressings such as bandages, pads, and drainage swabs are constituted of woven or entangled carbonized fibres, for example carbonized lamp wick or cotton wadding. The carbon may be prepared and activated by any known means. The dressings may hold chemical substances such as iodine, formol, lime, oxygen, or bacillary toxins. They may be inserted into body cavities, such as the female genital organs, and may be formed as drainage tubes, for example by making into the form of a tubular wick with the addition of an adhesive or other substance which hardens on carbonization. The carbonized products may be used with additional supports or carriers, or may be mixed with uncarbonized fibres. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the use of the materials, either dry or suitably impregnated, for protection against noxious substances in the atmosphere. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 4212/82, [Class 46, Filtering &c.], 5910/86, 8861/90, 7902/01, [all in Class 81, Medicine &c.], 155,272, 243,801, [both in Class 81 (i), Disinfecting &c.], and 307,835, [Class 81 (ii), Medical &c. appliances].
