Bandages and dressings ; catamenial appliances. -Surgical bandages and dressings and catamenial appliances consist of absorbent material enclosed in a cover of woven or knitted fabric the threads of which have been rendered waterproof and water-repellant, but of such mesh that the fabric as a whole remains pervious to liquids. The absorbent material may consist of defatted raw cotton with or without infusorial earth or the like. The outer cover may consist of cotton gauze treated with a solution of paraffin wax in benzol or woven from thread which has been so treated. The fabric may be treated also with antiseptics, deodorants, colouring matter and the like before or during waterproofing.
