Abstract

[Also in Groups XXIV and XXXVII] In a time switch, angular setting of a stop 52 fixed to a shaft 51 may be effected coarsely or finely. For coarse adjustment the knob 55, which is fixed to a sleeve 56 normally clutched to the shaft 51 at 58, 59, is simply rotated, a pointer 54 on the knob moving over a scale. For fine adjustment the knob 55 is first pressed in against a spring 57 so that parts 58, 59 become unclutched and a pinion 56a on the sleeve 56 engages the first wheel 60 of a train of reduction gearing, the last wheel 63 of which is fixed to the shaft 51. Rotation of the knob then only rotates the shaft 51 at one tenth the rate. Once the rotation of the knob has started it cannot return into its original axial position owing to a headed stud 65 engaging beneath a slot in a fixed plate 49. In a modification, Figs. 10, 11, the knob 102 is fixed to the pointer 101 and to the shaft 100 carrying the stop 52. The shaft 100 also has fixed to it a wheel 104 which through gearing 62, 60 drives a pinion 103 carrying a disc 105 with six teeth 105a. The disc 105 rotates ten times as fast as the knob 102 and its teeth co-operate with a scale 106 to enable tenths of a division of the main scale to be accurately set by operating the disc 105.
