Abstract
725,277. Clocks. ROSE, R. J. C. Jan. 6, 1953 [June 19, 1952], No. 408/53. Class 139. A pendulum clock beat setting device comprises a member for locking the pendulum in a plumb position, a friction clutch in the operative connection between the pallet and the pendulum, an element adapted to locate the pallet in the correct seat position relatively to the escape wheel against the action of the friction clutch, and means for ensuring that the pendulum is locked before the pallet is located in position. The pendulum crutch 8, Figs. 1 and 4, is connected to one half of a friction clutch 14, the other half of which is fixed to the arbor 13 carrying the pallet anchor 17. The upper end 7 of the crutch 8 lies adjacent a curved surface 11 of a lever 4 freely pivoted on a spindle 2 and urged clockwise by a spring 5 to normally engage a projection 6 of a lever 1 fixed to the spindle 2 and extending above the anchor 17. To set the clock in correct beat the pendulum 25 and its crutch 8 are first located in a plumb position. The spindle 2 and the lever are then rotated clockwise by a manually 'operated linkage (Fig. 6, not shown). The top 7 of the crutch is thereupon engaged by a slot 12 in the surface 11 of the lever 4 to lock the pendulum and crutch in the plumb position and a spring pressed pawl 9 engages a notch 15 in the crutch half of the friction clutch 14. Upon continued movement of the spindle 2 the lever 1 strikes the anchor 17 and correctly locates it with respect to the escape wheel 18 Fig. 3, not shown). As the said linkage is released the levers 1 and 4 are returned to their initial positions and the pawl 9 jerks the clutch 14 to impulse the pendulum. In a modification (Fig. 7) the anchor 17 carries a member 26, the ends 28 of which co-operate with the lever 1, the outer end of which has an adjustable screw 27 so that the exact seat position can be determined. In other modifications (Figs. 8 and 9, not shown) one of the parts 1 or 17 has a V-shaped notch which is engaged by a projection on the other part.
