[Also in Group XX] A scale reading device comprises a projection apparatus for projecting an enlarged image of part of a graduated scale upon a screen, a marker adapted for movement over the screen, said marker being coupled to a counter for indicating the position of the marker, relative to the screen. As shown, an image T<SP>1</SP>, of a graduation T on scale M is projected on to a screen W and a fork-shaped marker G can, by rotation of knob D for fine movement and knob F for coarse movement, be moved over the screen, this movement being transmitted to a counter Z through gearing K. It is possible to arrange that, for a linear scale, the counter moves a hundred times between two graduations on the scale, and for a circular scale two counters may be provided so that for 120 revolutions of spindle S a scale of 10 minutes can be covered in 120 steps of 5 seconds each.
