652,051. Indicating-apparatus. MINISTER OF SUPPLY. March 13, 1948, No. 7699. [Class 106 (iv)] [Also in Group XX] Indicating apparatus comprises three members mounted side by side for an. gular movement about a common axis with the intermediate member serving as a carrier for balls, rollers or wheels through which angular movement relative to the carrier can be transmitted to the one outer member from the other and the one outer member is normally clutched to the intermediate member for angular movement as one therewith, and the other outer member is movable (a) axially toward the intermediate member to cause the balls, rollers or wheels to bear on the first outer member and declutch it from the intermediate member, and (b) angularly to adjust the angular position of the first outer member relative to the intermediate member. An aircraft instrument comprises an annular dial 1, for indicating direction against a mark 2, secured to the rim of an intermediate member 4 which is dished to accommodate an outer member 5 bearing a course-setting disc 6 flush with the dial 1. A stud 7 extends axially from the member 4 to support the member 5 which is pressed by a spring 8 into frictional contact with surfaces 11 of the member 4 so as to be driven angularly therewith by gyroscopic means coupled to a shaft 12. Balls 17, 18 are carried in holes in the member 4 and are disposed between the member 5 and a second outer member 14 with a toothed periphery, mounted loosely on the shaft 12. To declutch the member 5 from the member 4 and reset it relative thereto, a knob 25 is pressed against a spring 26 axially parallel to the shaft 12 so that its end rocks a lever 21 against a spring 23 and presses the member 14 and balls 17, 18 toward the member 5 to break the frictional contact between the members 4 and 5 and the knob 25 is turned so that a pinion 27 now in mesh with the member 14 drives the member 14 and through the balls 17, 18 also the member 5. In a modification, not shown, the resetting shaft may be at an angle to the shaft 12 and if at right angles it may co-operate directly or indirectly cam-fashioned with the member 4 to disengage the member 5 therefrom, thus obviating the lever 21. The balls 17, 18 may co-operate with V-shaped or bevelled tracks in the outer members 5, 14. Other forms of clutch may be used.
