Class 12(1) A method of reducing friction between relatively moving surfaces of bearings comprises interposing between the surfaces a layer consisting of non- metallic spherical particles of substantially uniform diameter. The particles preferably consist of polymethylmethacrylate of the order of 0.010 inch in diameter. The layer may be loosely retained between the surfaces or it may be bonded to one of them by the use of a suitable adhesive. A plain bearing comprises a flanged bush 1, Fig. 1, housing a layer of particles 3 which may bear directly on a shaft 4 or on a bush secured thereto. A thrust bearing comprises relatively rotatable elements 9, 12 having between them a layer of particles 3. A lubricant such as water or thin oil may be used.
