Abstract

715,824. Stropping safety-razor blades. NEALE, L. A., and HALL, C. Sept. 10, 1952 [Sept. 10, 1951], No. 21292/51. Class 60 . A device for stropping double-edged safetyrazor blades comprises an endless stropping belt 12 supported by rollers 13, 14 mounted in the lower part 11 of the casing. A slide 23 is secured to the belt by screws 21 and nuts 22 and is also secured to an operating handle 24 adapted to be reciprocated by the user. Guides 26 are provided for the handle, the upper surfaces of the guides forming bearing surfaces upon which the strop is pressed by the blade edge; similar bearing surfaces 27 are provided on the upper casing part 10. A tiltable blade holder is located between the runs of the strop 12 adjacent the bearing members 26, 27 and comprises two main parts; the blade holder itself, which comprises a removable slide 28 having two studs 29 to engage the locating holes of the blade 30, and a supporting member 31 for the slide 28. The member 31 has depending lugs 32 engaged by a pivot pin 33 so that it is pivotally supported by the casing 11. An upper guide member 34, spaced slightly from the supporting member 31, is provided for receiving between it and. the supporting member, the blade holder 28 and the blade 30 mounted therein, with the blade edges projecting laterally. The blade holder 28 is automatically tilted at reversal of stroke by a lost-motion linkage between it and the slide 23, the linkage comprising a link 35 pivoted at one end to a lug 36 upstanding from one end of the supporting member 31; the link 35 is slidably secured to a lug 37 upstanding from the corresponding end of the slide 23, being clamped between the lug 37 and a clamping plate 38; a coiled spring is interposed between the clamping plate and the head of a screw 30 passing through the plate 38, through a slot 41 in the link 35 and into the lug 37. Alternatively, the link may be frictionally held between the lug 37 and a leaf spring secured by one end to the lug 37. In a modification, Fig. 5, the slide 23 has limited sliding movement relatively to the strop 12, the slide being provided with a pair of upstanding pegs 45 operating' in slots in the strop 12 and in corresponding slots 46 in a member 47 secured as by rivets 48 to'the strop; the slide 23 has a lug 37 to which a link 35 is frictionally connected as in the previous embodiment.
