A sharpener for safety razor blades comprises a holder for a blade arranged so that a bevelled edge, or both edges, of the blade, is spring pressed on the periphery of a sharpening or honing wheel or wheels and means whereby the wheel or wheels is or are rotated and the blade holder reciprocated in a direction at right angles to the wheel or wheels. The sharpener comprises parts A, B slidable on one another. The part A is box-shaped, being open at the top and at one end; a transverse spindle 2 is rotatably mounted in the bottom of slots 3 in the side walls 4. A sharpening or honing wheel or disc 6 is mounted on the spindle near each end and inside the side walls. The part B comprises a bottom plate 7 slidable on the bottom of part A and an end wall 8 which when the parts are closed together forms an end wall of the part A. A rack bar 9 on the plate 7 engages a toothed wheel 5 on the spindle 2. The end wall 8 on the part B carries a blade holder which is spring pressed inwardly to press the bevelled edges of the blade 10 on the sharpening wheels 6. The holder comprises a flat plate 11 pivoted on a pin carried by lugs 12 on the end wall 8, the tail of the plate 11 being shaped as a thumb piece 13. The plate 11 is spring pressed inwardly by a strip spring 14 fixed to the plate 7. and.having an arm 14a bearing on'the thumb piece 13. The blade 10 is held against the underside of the :plate 11 by a slide plate 15 having a curled tail piece 15a which slidably engages over the end of the plate 11, the forward end engaging under a blade spring 16 fixed to the underside of the plate 11. The plate 15 has a registering peg 17 slidably engaging a slot 11a in the plate 11 and also engaging a hole in the blade. The wheels 6 have conical peripheries.
