[Class 60.] Apparatus for stropping and honing razor blades consists of a box having two sides 11 and an end 12, joined by a base 13 which may form a hone or strop. The sides 11 carry guides 14 of channel section, within the edges of which are slidably mounted parts 17 of the ends 16 of a blade-holder carriage, the ends 16 being connected by a base 18 and having journalled therein a spindle 19 carrying at each end a pinion 20 located within the guides 14. Longitudinally movable within the guides are slides 21 each provided at one end with a rack extension 22 gearing with one of the pinions 20 ; the slides are connected by a crosspiece 34 serving to close one end of the box and as a handle, and additional handle members 35 may be provided on the piece 34. The box also carries a removable plate 25 having secured on one face a strop 23, and on the other face a hone 24. The blade holder comprises a spring sleeve 27 secured by a rivet 29 to a member 30, which is flexibly connected to the spindle by the rivet ; a spring 32 may be provided riveted to the spindle and engaging under the head 31 of the rivet. In operation, the slides 21 are reciprocated in the guides, the first movement causing the racks to swing a blade 33, held by the holder, with its edge in contact with the sharpening surface, subsequent movement moving the blade along the surface and applying pressure through the racks and pinions. In order to provide the requisite pressure of the blade on the strop, friction devices, which may be adjustable, may be provided between the ends 16, or the spindle 19, or the pinions 20 and the guides, or between the carriage and the strop or hone. A cover may be provided for the box, provided with means for holding a razor, and with end catches, engaging respectively the end 12 and a spring plunger 41 on the crosspiece 34. In a modification, the member 30 may loosely embrace the spindle 19, collars, recesses, or a screw &c. preventing sliding movement. According to the Provisional Specification a strop is provided on one side of the carriage, and a hone on the other side, the one not in use being detached or rendered inoperative.
