Stropping-apparatus; hones.-A safety-razor blade is sharpened by two rollers 2 composed of stropping-material and having therein helical grooves 25 charged with a honing-material. The rollers are mounted in a frame 1 and are driven through gearing 3, 4, 4<a>, 5 by a handle 6, a ratchet device 8, 9 being provided to prevent rotation in the wrong direction. The blade 11 is mounted in a holder carried by a frame 13 pivoted at 14 to the frame 1 and normally lifted by a spring. The holder comprises a plate 16 pivoted in the frame 13 by pins 16<a> and having weights or projections 18 at its ends, and the blade is mounted with the holes therein fitting over studs 17 on the plate. The blade is held in position by a bar 19, which is secured to the studs 17 by a bent leaf spring 20 mounted on a pin 21 fixed on the bar and adapted to be depressed, so that its ends engage in notches 22 in the studs, by a thimble 23 rotatable on the pin 21 and held in the locking position by a head 24 on the pin. To release the bar. the thimble is turned so that a slot 23a therein registers with the head 24. In operation the blade is pressed down on the rollers by depression of the frame 13, which is held down by a spring catch; thimble 23 is upwards during the sharpening of one side of the blade edges. The catch is then released and the frame 13 rises, the weights 18 causing rotation of the blade-holder so that the next sharpening operation is upon the other sides of the blade edges. In a modified construction, the spring 20 is arc-shaped and the thimble 23 has on its underside a cam-shaped groove receiving the middle part of the spring; the thimble is rotated to force the spring towards the locking bar 19.
