Class 94 (1) In a filling-machine, bags 11 are supported in the pockets 10 of an intermittently-operated conveyer which positions them successively beneath a filling spout 15 which is reciprocated vertically, in guides secured to a support 14, by a link 28 coupled to a cam-operated bellcrank 30. As the spout moves dowardly to the filling .position it passes through an apertured support 32 and its lower end engages a series of radial fingers 37 mounted on the support and swings them downwardly to spread the bag mouth for the reception of the spout. Each finger, Fig. 5, is made of resilient wire and comprises a V-shaped tip portion 38 and spaced legs 39, the ends of which are pivoted on a pin 40, detachably mounted on a plate 35 secured to the support 32, and are extended to form a torsion spring 43 around the pin which normally maintains the finger in a horizontal position. The bag is clamped to the spout by opposed pairs of shoes 45, Figs. 3 and 6, lined with sponge rubber 49, each shoe being pivoted at 46 on an angle member 47 and acted on by a tension spring 51. The angle members are secured to pairs of arms 52 which are pivoted on pins 53 projecting from the sides of the support 32 and carry adjustable, intermeshing segment gears 55, 58. The latter also mesh with segment gears 61 mounted on a shaft 62 and operated by a lever 63 which is adjustably secured to a link 65 coupled to a lever 67 which is operated by a cam in synchronism with the downward movement of the spout.
