Abstract

770,002. Packaging. MEDWAY PAPER SACKS, Ltd. July 29, 1955 [May 10, 1954], No. 13593/54. Class 94(1). [Also in Group XXX] Filled sacks or bags travelling on a conveyer in upright position with one side edge foremost are turned through ninety degrees about a vertical axis and then laid flat with their bottoms foremost, e.g. for delivery to a flattening and stacking mechanism, by an arm 13b pivoted on a vertical pin 11 and normally extending across the conveyer, the end of the arm having a portion 14 which is bent rearwardly to engage one face of each sack in turn over about a third of its width, so that as a sack engages the arm 13b the latter swings through ninety degrees and the portion 14 turns the sack and tips it backwards. To avoid the sack being tipped over before completing the ninety degree turn, an arm 13a integral with the arm 13b extends rearwardly parallel with the portion 14 so as to support the adjacent face of the sack during turning. A flanged portion 9 on a support 7 for the pin 11 co-operates with brackets 10 to which the arms are welded to restrict their pivotal movement to ninety degrees. A spring, (not shown) returns the arms after each sack has been tipped. The support 7 is adjustable longitudinally on a bracket 6 which in turn is adjustable vertically with respect to a bracket 1 secured to the conveyer frame 2, these parts being secured in position by clamps. Each of the arms 13a, 13b is of telescopic construction to allow of extension to suit different sizes of sacks. In an alternative construction, Figs 5 and 7, four arms 23 radiate from a hub 26a, each arm in turn being adapted to extend across the conveyer and having a rearwardly extending end portion 25. The following arm 23 acts as the support arm during turning of each sack. The movement of the arms 23 is checked at the end of each ninety degree movement by a pair of spring- loaded levers 28 carrying cam-followers 29 cooperating with a four-throw cam 27 secured to the stationary pivot 24. Alternatively a spring- loaded plunger carried by the hub may cooperate with the cam through a follower roller. The pivot 24 is movable longitudinally, laterally and vertically with respect to the conveyer by being carried on a slotted plate 20 adjustably secured to a perforated plate 18 which in turn is adjustable vertically on the bracket 1.
