Sack - holders. - A bag spreader and holder for machines for filling tea or powdered, granular, or like materials into paper bags &c., particularly machines of the kind described in Specification 262,550, [Class 94 (i), Packing &c.], has a number of relatively movable fingers which are contracted to facilitate placing a paper bag or other receptacle thereon when swung into an inclined receiving position, and are expanded for the purpose of stretching and exerting an internal grip on the receptacle when returned to the vertical position. A number of carriers, each comprising a main bracket a, are mounted on vertical guide rods b on a rotatable frame as described in the abovementioned Specification. A rectangular plate d, having an aperture through which the filling nozzle of the machine (not shown) may pass, is pivoted on arms c on the bracket. Fingers f on short levers g actuable by a rotatable ring i on the underside of the plate d, depend as shown in Fig. 4, at the beginning of a cycle of operations. The fingers are in the contracted position and are swung out of the vertical position so that a bag can be applied by an attendant. The device then moves to the filling position, Fig. 2, with the fingers expanded so as to open the bag, and depending vertically from the holder. In moving from one position to the other, a rack t is actuated to rotate pinions r, s, k and to move a rack l on a rod o relatively to the plate d. An abutment w acting on a roller x prevents immediate rotary movement of the holder about the pivots on the arms c, but the ring i is rotated by a pin n thereon engaging with a slotted arm m attached to the rack l, thus causing the fingers f to move away from each other to open the bag. When the abutment w has passed the roller x, the holder swings into a horizontal position with the fingers vertical, and the bag is now ready to receive a charge. The holder may be temporarily secured in the filling position by a spring catch. A spring-controlled foot h is mounted on the bracket, and is caused by a fixed roller 3 to move into position to support the bottom of the bag during filling. The bracket descends slowly during the filling, the foot h is moved aside and the fingers' f are contracted sufficiently to allow the bag to fall into another part of the machine.
