Feeding articles from stacks or piles by pusher devices engaging their edges.-In a machine for applying the extension bottoms to boxes and covering them, the devices for conveying the wrappers and boxes to the covering machine and for glueing the wrappers and delivering them to the conveying device are of the same character as those described in Specification 254,684, the conveyer unit C, Fig. 1, being modified to receive and carry extension bottoms above the wrappers s. The extension bottoms A, Figs. 4 and 10, are carried in an adjustable hopper 82 - - 85 on a table 77 and are supported on a reciprocating member 81 slidably mounted in the table 77 which is disposed at one side of the unit C and carried by one of a pair of frames 75 secured to the glueing unit G. The bottoms are fed one by one towards pivoted grippers V<1>, Fig. 8, carried by the chains 56 of the unit C, by an adjustable bar 92<a> on the member 81, a feed roller 95, and a glueing roller 96 taking the bottom A and passing it to a pair of rapidly rotating rollers 102, 103 by which it is thrown through an opening 107 in the frame 75 on to the guide plates 108 where it is engaged by the end 113 of a reciprocating rod 109 and pushed on to guide plates 164, 173 carried by arms on adjustable rods 159, 171 adjustably mounted on members 155, 156 secured to the frames 75; the rod 109 is slidably mounted in the member 81 and the end 113 as it passes off a supporting bracket 115 through the opening 107 is turned to a vertical position by a spring 114 to engage the edge of the bottom. The members 81, 109, and the feed and glueing rollers are actuated by gearing from the shafts 61 which rotate once for each cycle of operations of the wrapping machine. The bottom, positioned by the guide plates 164, 173, also rests with its corners on the palms 154 of the grippers V<1> on the temporarily stationary chains 56 and at the appropriate time the arms carrying the plate 164 are actuated from cams 167 on the shafts 61 to release the bottom, which is then entirely supported by the grippers V<1> and carried forward.
