Abstract

659,874. Packeting-machines. ARNOLD, J. C. (Pneumatic Scale Corporation, Ltd.). July 11, 1949, No. 18318. [Class 94(i)] A machine for completing the closure of a filled package, comprising an inner bag provided with a mouth closure and an outer container such as a carton or shell, comprises means for folding a portion of the mouth closure against the outside of the container, means for lifting the bag out of the container a distance sufficient to free the folded portion and means for moving the bag back into the container while holding the folded portion against the side of the bag to dispose the folded portion within the container walls. In an alternative construction the bag is first moved out of the container and a portion of the mouth closure then folded against the side of the bag. In one form, containers comprising an open-ended shell 20, Fig. 2, and an inner bag 18 are fed by a conveyer 30 and pusher 34, Fig. 1, into the pockets 14 of an intermittently rotating spider 12. Each container is filled at station 2, and at stations 3-6 the mouth of the bag is spread, flattened and folded to form a closure having laterally extending flaps 44, Fig. 14, which are tucked within the walls of the shell at station 7 in the manner indicated above. The flap-tucking mechanism is shown in Figs. 18 and 19 and comprises spring-urged fingers 74, 76 pivoted to a plunger 78 which is carried by parallel arms 80, 82 pivoted to a fixed member 84, an extension 90 of the arm 82 being connected by a link 92 to a bell crank lever 94 which is rocked by a cam 102 to effect reciprocation of the plunger. As the plunger descends, the fingers 74, 76 engage and fold down the Raps 44 against the sides of the shell, and at the same time an elevator plate 112, slidably mounted on a rod 118 and operated through linkage by a cam 120, is caused to rise and engage the bottom of the bag. Thereafter, the plate and plunger rise together with the bag gripped between them until the flaps 44 are clear of the upper edges of the shell, and then descend together to move the bag back into the shell with the flaps disposed within the walls of the shell. During the descending movement the flaps are pressed against the sides of the bag by the fingers 74, 76, the curved ends 79 of which ride over the edge of the shell. While the plate 112 is in its raised position a pair of pivoted daubers 140, which normally rest in baths 156 of adhesive, are raised and swung outwardly by cam mechanism to apply adhesive to the inner surfaces of the walls of the shell. Alternatively, adhesive may be applied to the sides of the bag by daubers 180: A cam-operated member 200 may be provided to hold the folded seam 45 of the bag closure flat against the top of the bag during the movement of the package into station 7. In a second form, Fig. 22, for use with containers comprising a carton 164, Fig. 3, closed at its bottom end and an inner bag 162, the fingers 74, 76 are pivoted to a suction pad 168 mounted in a similar manner to the plunger 78, vacuum being applied through a connection 172 when the pad is raised to lift the bag.
