Abstract

715, 349. Mining machines. HENSEL, A. Feb. 4, 1952 [Feb. 3, 1951], No. 2919/52. Class 68(1) A mining machine, in which a series of milling cutters 14 are rotated as the interconnected holders 12 thereof are reciprocated across the mine face while the machine is advanced with a co-related step-by-step motion, comprises a flat frame, substantially triangular in plan, provided with pulleys 7, 8 about which passes a driving cable 3. A pulley 24 is driven from the pulley 8, so that the cable 3 causes movement of a cable 22 about said pulley 24 and a further pulley 23, with resultant engagement of members 26 on the cable 22 with recesses 27 on a pulley 4 to turn the latter a limited amount for each circuit made by the members 26. This intermittent rotation of the pulley 4 causes the intermittent advance of the frame along a fixed cable 2 which extends parallel to the face and around the pulley 4. To the cable 22 is pivotally attached a link 21 secured to a cable 18 extending around pulleys 19 and connected to the tool holders 12. Thus, as the cable 22 moves around pulleys 23. 24 the tool holders 12 are reciprocated in a guideway 13 formed in the side 10 of the frame. Each milling cutter 14 is connected to a pulley 15 on the holder 12 and about the pulley 15 passes an endless cable 9 which is driven from the pulley 4 and thus causes rotation of the cutters 14. Drawn by the frame into the kerf formed by the milling cutters is a breaking down tool 31 comprising two telescopically interengaging halves 30. 31 which are forced apart when projections on one part areengaged by annular wedge surfaces 42 on a worm wheel 37 mounted in the other part.
