In a mineral-mining machine a cutter pick 2 is mounted at the or each end of one or more radially extending arms 27 of a cutter head rotatable in a plane parallel to a conveyer 3 along which a body 30 supporting the cutter head and. the drive means 24, 25 thereof is reciprocated automatically by suitable control means regulating the means for moving the body along the conveyer. The machine is designed to allow of removal of mineral in a series of shallow cuts from a face against which the cutter head is pressed. The body 30 is moved to and fro along the conveyer by a block slidable in guides disposed within the body transversely of the direction of movement thereof, the block being swingably connected with a link of an endless chain 18 circulating on and about a raised track 5 in the centre of the bed 4 of the scraper conveyer 3 between drive and idler sprockets 19 disposed coaxially of the drive and idler sprockets 8 of the scraper conveyer. Toe plates disposed at floor level on the face side of the conveyer trough limit the advance of the machine towards the face by rams 2 pressing on the trough 1 after the cutter head has removed mineral from ahead of the toe plates on passing along the plates.
