Abstract

714,848. Hoist attachments for facilitating access through confined openings. MORAN, F. J. May 16, 1952 [June 28, 1951], No. 15344/51. Class 78 (4) To facilitate access to part of a bold or other chamber remote from a hatchway a load hook is mounted for traversing movement along a runway suspended, e.g. from the hook of the crane, and maintained substantially horizontal by a counter load. As illustrated the hook is carried by a trolley 21 (Fig. 8) traversed along a I-section runway 19 which telescopes into a hollow beam 10 and the counter load is applied to an arm 30 which telescopes outside the beam 10. The runway 19 is supported by its upper flanges on rollers 20 (Fig. 3) within the beam 10 and by a trolley 25 (Fig. 8) secured to the runway and provided with wheels 26 which bear on the outwardly directed flanges (see Fig. 3) of the beam 10. The lower flanges of the runway 19 are partly cut away to define a track for the trolley 21 which is held captive by a vertical plate at the outer end of the runway. The arm 30 includes side plates 31, 32 (Fig. 4) spaced from the sides of the beam 10 by pressure plates 41 against which the side plates may be adjustably clamped by bolts (not shown). A retaining member secured to the lower flanges of the runway 19 may embrace the lower flanges of the beam 10, or may carry rollers bearing on these flanges, to prevent the sides of the beam from splaying. When the device is being raised or lowered through a hatchway the runway 19 and the arm 30 are locked in their retracted position by a bolt 39 (Fig. 4) passed through registering holes in the runway, the arm, and the beam 10 and engaging also notches 40 (Fig. 8) in the trolley 21 to retain it beneath the lifting shackle 28 by which the device is suspended. An indicator (not shown) on the lug to which the shackle 28 is secured indicates whether the device is horizontal. Hooks and pulleys may be provided for extending and retracting the runway 19 and the arm 30 and for propelling the trolley 21, and an eye 27 on the runway 19 facalitates positioning of the device. The counter load may be provided, as shown, by a winch 42 in the hold which is connected to an eye 35 on the arm 30. Block and tackle may be suspended from the hook on the trolley 21. Preferred proportions for the runway'19, the arm 30, and the extensions of these members are given in the Specification.
