Patented May 13, 1952 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE PORTABLE CRANE Julius Z. Feigelson, Beaumont, Tex. Application August 18, 1949, Serial No. 110,941
(ci. 25a-139) 1 Claim. 1
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in portable cranes or hoists of a type usually installed on a motor truck or other type of mobile load carrying unit.
An important object of the invention is to provide a novel sheave unit mounted at the upper end of the boom and which enables lifting the load to its maximum lifting height, thus eliminating the loss of lifting height that results in a type of hoist using a snatch block.
A further object of the invention is to provide guide rollers at right angles to the axis of the sheave to serve as a guide for holding the cable on the sheave and to permit a sideways pull on the cable without danger of the cable jumping ol the sheave.
A still further object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is strong and durable, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction andy operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view;
Figure 2 is a front elevational sheave unit. and
Figure 3 is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken on a line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates a truck body, platform or similar supporting structure and to the rear or other edge of which a boom 6 composed of a pair of upwardly converging supports 1 is suitably supported.
A sheave unit is designated generally at 8 and is of generally A-form with the lower ends of its legs 9 suitably secured in the upper ends of the supports 1. The sheave unit 8 includes a horizontal shaft I or cross-bar at the central portion of which a sheave I I is journaled.
Braclng Webs I2 are welded to the inner sides of each of the legs 9 above and below shaft Ill and at each side of sheave II and U-shaped brackets I3l project rearwardly from the web at each side of sheave Il.
Rollers I4 are journaled on shafts` I5 which project forwardly at each side of sheave II at right angles to shaft I0, the inner ends of shafts I being journaled in bearing bosses I6 and the outer ends of `sha-f ,I 5 aredournaled in bearings v hangerfrods-,Ig which are welded lor otherwise suitably secured at their view of the winding a hoisting cable extends over the sheave upper ends to the upper portion of the `A-frame A chain I9 connects the brackets I3 to the truck body or platform 5 and a Winch 20 is suitably mounted on the body or platform 5 for 2| thereon and which II and provided with a load attaching hook 22.
In the operation of the device with the sheave or A-frame unit 8 mounted at the upper end of supports 1 the cable 2I may travel over the sheave to hoist a load attached to hook 22.
The guide rollers I4 will keep the cable centered on the sheave and also enable a sideways pull on the load from either side of the sheave, as indicated in Figure 3 of the drawings.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the construction, operation and advantages vof the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A hoist comprising a boom, an .A-shaped sheave frame forming the upper end of the boom and including across bar, a sheave journaled on the cross bar, bracing webs connected to the ,V upper end of said frame and projecting inwardly from each side of the frame and centering the sheave on the cross bar, shafts connected to said cross bar and projecting forwardly from the cross bar at each side of the sheave, rollers on the shafts, and hangers connected to and extending downwardly from the upper portion of the frame and supporting the shafts.
