714,800. Explosively-operated devices for igniting fuels. FRANCAIS ETAT. May 22, 1952, No. 13046/52. Class 9(1) Relates to a slow-burning powder operated ignition device for jet engines for use up to 200‹C, the igniting charge consisting of a slow-burning powder as disclosed in Specification 681,095. The device comprises a body 1 with a nozzle at one end and a screw-plug closure 2 at the other, a cylindrical charge 3 of slow-burning powder with a high ignition temperature being mounted in the body 1 between supporting grids 4, 5. A metal disc 6 separates the grid 5 from the nozzle and a spring 7 bearing against the plug 2 holds a black-powder capsule 8 against the grid 4. A washer 9 holds in position an electric igniter 10 the leads 11 being carried through a socket 12 of refractory material mounted in the plug 2. The electric igniter may be replaced by a friction igniter actuated by means of a pull-wire. In a modification the charge of slow-burning powder has an axial passage and is mounted between a centrally apertured doubleflanged cap and a disc-holding member, the capsule of black-powder being placed in the cap on the opposite side to the charge, the spring 7 being replaced by a distance piece.
