[Also in Group XIII] In grass drying apparatus (see Group XIII) in which the grass has moisture expressed from it by compression and is then chopped into lengths by knives, the grass is fed through a hopper 2 into a casing 1 having perforations 3 near one end which is closed by a perforated conical wall 4, the perforated part being surrounded by a casing 5 having a conical end 6 forming a fixed cutter head and leaving an annular space 7. Apertures 8 in the wall 4 surrounded by a rim 10 extending across the space 7 are in alignment with similar apertures 9 in the fixed head 6. A shaft 12 mounted in bearings 13, 14 coaxial with casing 1, carries a screw conveyer 16 which co-operates with helical blades 17 on the inside of the casing 1 and keyed to the shaft is a rotary cutter head 27 having four arms 28 parallel to the head 6 and supporting knives 29 clamped between plates 30 and one flange of the arms 28. The knives 29 are maintained in contact with head 6 by the pressure of the grass fed by the worm and are selfsharpening. The chopped grass is collected in a chamber 11 and expressed moisture is removed from the annular space 7 via a pipe 24, and the shaft 12 has an axial bore 18 and holes 19 through which liquid is led to a collecting ring 21. The apparatus may be combined with a drying apparatus of the type described in Specifications 642,212 and 651,375, [both in Group XIII], so as to deliver the cut grass thereto.
