Abstract
A refractory article comprises a carbon body of density 0.7 to 1.1 grams per cubic centimetre and having on its surface only, or on preselected surface areas only, an integral layer of silicon carbide. The layer is of uniform thickness, and contains silicon or silicon rich material between the crystals of silicon carbide. The carbon body is obtained by reaction between furfural, furfuryl alcohol or mixtures thereof with sulphuric or hydrochloric acid in proportion, by volume, of 65 to 80, to 35 to 20, of acid. A finely divided carbon filler may also be present. The body is heated at above 1800 DEG C. in contact with molten silicon or silicon vapour.
