Abstract

A refractory and abrasive article comprises silicon carbide bonded uniformly throughout its mass with a substance of the formula Si3 N4 and which substance does not contain any unconverted silicon. At least 5 per cent. Si3 N4 is present. The article is made by firing a moulded mixture of silicon carbide grains and silicon of a size passing 200 U.S. standard mesh in a nitrogenous atmosphere. To aid in moulding pentonite may be added. Specification 716,836 is referred to.
