Abstract
A shaped granular silicon carbide body interstitially contains zirconium carbide and boron carbide fused to one another and to the silicon carbide. Silicon carbide can also be present in the interstitial mass. The body is made by shaping a mix of the silicon carbide and a temporary binder, e.g. lignone, drying, heating, with a mixture containing the carbides of zirconium and boron and possibly silicon carbide, in an inert atmosphere to a temperature at which the carbide mixture fuses and impregnates the pores of the body. The products may be used, as grinding wheels &c. for abrasive purposes. The carbide impregnant can also be formed by heating a mixture of the carbides of silicon and boron with zirconia and carbon.
