Abstract

<PICT:0712096/III/1> In a still of the type wherein heating gases are passed between the outer walls of a container 1 to be heated and the inner walls of a jacket 2, a small but even space 3 is provided between the walls and a lateral supply and/or withdrawal connection 9 for the heating gases leads to or from an annular distributing or collecting channel 6, the resistance to the passage of gases between the channel 6 and the space 3 diminishing as the distance from the connection 9 decreases. As shown in Fig. 1, heating gases leaving the space 3 flow through a gap formed between a circular row of bricks 8 and the wall of the container 1, this gap being narrowest adjacent the outlet connection 9 and widest at that part most remote from the outlet connection.
