Abstract

712,007. Heat insulation. WIPLIER, G. June 18, 1952 [June 18, 1951], No. 15363/52. Class 64(2) [Also in Group XXII] A solid, infusible, heat insulating and lubricating composition interposed between a metal body to be extruded, particularly of stainless and alloy steels, and an adjacent surface of the extruding assembly, comprises a heat insulating, porous, non-abrasive substance in a divided state, a solid lubricating substance having a lamellar structure such as flaked graphite, a highly oxygenated compound such as a metal oxide such as pyrolusite, lead dioxide or bismuth tetroxide, a carbon-like finely divided material which will react with the highly oxygenated compound at the extrusion temperature, and a combustible binder for agglomerating the material. The material may be moulded under moderate pressure to retain substantial porosity and baked. It may be inserted as a disc &c. between the forward or rearward end of the billet and the die or pressure chamber respectively, or as a tubular sleeve or in paste form around a tube-forming mandrel. The non- abrasive constituent may comprise a combustible organic substance in divided state such as sawdust, pulverized cork or straw. The binder may be a natural or synthetic resin, pitch or an agglomerant vegetable oil, particularly linseed oil. In a specific example the material comprises sawdust 10 per cent, flaked graphite 60 per cent, carbon black 23 per cent, pyrolusite 3 per cent, and linseed oil 4 per cent, by weight.
