Abstract
<PICT:0895700/III/1> <PICT:0895700/III/2> <PICT:0895700/III/3> A mixture of carbon and a carbonizable binder is extruded as a continuous strip which is closely coiled round a cylindrical former by simultaneous rotation and longitudinal movement of the former, and the coiled strip is heated to form a continuous carbon tube and optionally to carbonize the binder. The side faces of the strip may be scraped by a serrated edge and coated with the same or another carbonizable binder to effect better union between adjacent coils on carbonization. The strip may be extruded solid (Fig. 1, not shown) or hollow (Fig. 2). A hollow strip may be extruded with a fin on the inner or outer surface (Fig. 3) or both (Fig. 4). The binder may be pitch, tar, or a thermosetting resin.
