Abstract

711,576. Fluid-actuated valves. WILKERSON CORPORATION. May 1, 1952 [May 7, 1951], No. 11060/52. Class 135. [Also in Group XIII] A valve device for separating liquid &c. from compressed air comprises an inlet 22, Fig. 1, opening tangentially to. a chamber 11, an outlet 21 from a chamber 20 which is separated from the chamber 11 by a flexible diaphragm 12 having a passage 36 through it, and valve members 32, 33 connected by a stem 29 to the diaphragm and controlling drain ports 23, 26 in such manner that the two ports are never open at the same time. The diaphragm and valve members are urged downwardly to the position shown by a spring 47 engaging a tubular member 40 carried by the diaphragm, and in that position ports 43 in the member 40 are out of register with ports 49 in a fixed sleeve 44 so that the outlet 21 is cut off from the inlet 22 except for a slight leakage past the clearance between the member 40 and sleeve 44. Upon reduction of pressure in the chamber 20 due to consumption of compressed air, the diaphragm moves to permit communication between the chambers 11, 20 through the ports 43, 49, and to close the valve member 32 and open the valve member 33 so that separated liquid which has previously passed from the chamber 11 through the open valve member 32 to a sump 24 is discharged through the port 26 A filter 18 is fitted in the chamber 20. In a modification, in which a sleeve 72, Fig. 3, is raised by the diaphragm 53 to bring ports 77 above a plunger 79 and so interconnect the inlet 58 and outlet 57, the plunger 79 is movable against a spring 78 to interconnect the inlet and outlet in the event of a surge of pressure in the latter. Air entering at 58 impinges against a baffle 84.
