Abstract

711,499. Fitting elastic sleeves on cables. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd.,. July 15, 1952 [Aug. 1, 1951], No. 18182/51 Class 108(3) A tool for mounting elastic sleeves on wires &c. prises a tube 26 slidably mounted in a casing 10 and urged by a spring 30 so that it normally projects from an aperture 12<1> in the casing 10 (as shown) whereby an elastic sleeve (not shown) can be applied thereto, and actuating means for retracting the tube 26 so that the sleeve is removed from the tube by engagement with an area surrounding the aperture 12' the sleeve thus becoming applied to a wire &c. (not shown) previously inserted in the tube. Tn the construction shown in Fig. 6 the tube 26 is rigid with a tube 24 slidable within the housing 10 against the action of a spring 30. A rod 32 is carried by a tube 33 slidable within the tube 24. A trigger 51 is pivotally-mounted on a pin 53 rigid with the tube 33. The trigger extends through a slot 39 in the tube 24 and a slot 38 in the housing 10. In operation, an elastic sleeve is pushed on to the rod 32 and from thence on to the tube 26 (the rod and tube are tapered and polished). This is effected by means of an apertured rubber pad 43 carried by a holder 72 on an axially movable rod 61. A co-operating pin 70 and helical groove 68 cause (on axial movement of the rod 61) pad 43 to be swung from a position out of alignment with the rod 26 to a position (shown) in which the pad 43 is coaxial with the rod. On further axial movement the pad 43 engages the sleeve and forces it into position on the tube 26. The trigger is given a slight rotation to disengage a retaining catch 58 and is then drawn rearwardly. This effects retraction of the rod 32 further into the tube 26 within the housing, and makes way for the cable which is then inserted. When the trigger reaches the end 39" of the slot 39 (which is shorter than the slot 38), it picks up the tube 24, and further trigger movement retracts the tube 26 into the nose 12 of the housing and so leaves the sleeve on the cable. Provision may be made for the rod 32 to be entirely removed so that the cable may be passed right through the housing. 10. The nose 12, tube 26 and rod 32, may be made interchangeable with corresponding parts of different dimensions. In a modification, Figs. 1 to 5 (not shown), the trigger 51 is replaced by finger-holds disposed on opposite sides of the housing. The tool may, however, have pedal or power-actuating means. The elastic sleeves may be of polythene. According to the Provisional Specification, the elastic sleeves may be removed from the tube 26 manually and only one uf the members 26 and 32 need be tapered. The elastic sleeves may have diameters of .125 in. or less.
